Abstract

This chapter delves into the applications of geophysics in structural and geotechnical engineering, emphasizing the importance of non-destructive, cost-effective, and efficient subsurface investigation techniques. It covers a range of geophysical methods, including seismic, electrical, electromagnetic, gravity, and magnetic methods, and highlights their use in assessing structural integrity, monitoring bridge and dam health, detecting cracks and defects, and evaluating the dynamic behaviour of structures. Additionally, the chapter explores the applications of these methods in geotechnical engineering, such as site characterization, subsurface feature mapping, landslide and slope stability assessment, and evaluating the geotechnical properties of soils and rocks. Despite the challenges and limitations associated with data acquisition, quality, integration, and interpretation, the chapter underscores the potential of geophysical methods in enhancing our understanding of subsurface conditions and properties, ultimately contributing to safer and more resilient built environments. The integration of geophysical methods with remote sensing, geospatial technologies, and artificial intelligence is highlighted as a promising avenue for future research and development.
