At the start of a polar expedition in 1893, the Norwegian explorer and seafarer Fridtjof Nansen and his crew bore witness to an unexplained phenomenon which left them both bewildered and at a loss for what to do. The speed of their sailing ship, the Fram, suddenly dropped from 7 to only 1.5 knots without any identifiable cause. The direction and strength of the wind had not changed and there was no sign of an ocean current. For hours, the crew made vain attempts to escape the mysterious force and finally came up with a name for the strange occurrence: dead water.
