Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical factors influencing the accuracy of footing bearing capacity analysis using the Random Finite Element Method (RFEM). Traditional geotechnical analyses often assume homogeneous and isotropic soil conditions, which may not accurately reflect real-world soil behavior. The study highlights the importance of domain size in numerical simulations, demonstrating that both excessively small and large domain sizes can compromise accuracy and computational efficiency. By conducting error analysis on 100 random fields, the authors propose an optimal domain size of 6×10 W, which balances computational accuracy with resource efficiency. The research also considers the spatial variability of soils, incorporating fluctuation scales and parameters that significantly affect soil behavior. The findings provide valuable insights into optimizing domain size for various footing problems, ensuring reliable and efficient numerical simulations.
