Abstract

This chapter delves into the complexities of heterogeneous traffic conditions, where vehicles of varying sizes and dynamic characteristics coexist without strict lane discipline. It highlights the limitations of traditional traffic flow models, which are often designed for homogeneous traffic, and introduces the concept of area occupancy as a more accurate measure of traffic concentration. The chapter explores the factors affecting area occupancy, such as vehicle projected area, occupancy time, and detection zone size, and discusses how these factors influence traffic flow in urban environments. It also reviews existing literature on area occupancy, presenting case studies and simulation models that demonstrate the effectiveness of this metric in assessing traffic density and service levels. Furthermore, the chapter proposes a novel methodology for evaluating the accuracy of area occupancy and its relationship with traffic volume, offering insights into how this knowledge can be applied to improve traffic management and infrastructure planning. By addressing the challenges of modeling heterogeneous traffic and providing practical solutions, this chapter offers a comprehensive guide for understanding and managing traffic flow in diverse urban settings.
