Abstract

Magnesium and its alloy continue to grow as a material in automotive industries, because of their efficiency and ability to improve the power-to-weight ratio of transportation. Depending on the environmental conditions, magnesium can be subjected to varying degrees of atmospheric corrosion, as it is directly exposed to atmospheric conditions. Atmospheric corrosion behavior of AZ31B Magnesium in urban and rural environments was investigated in Indonesia. The test was carried out for 1, 2, and 4 months. Mass loss measurement results show that the longer the exposure time, the higher the atmospheric corrosion rate of the AZ31B alloy. In addition, the corrosion rate in the Mg AZ31B specimen in urban environment (ITB) tends to be higher than the corrosion rate in rural environment (Bosscha) related to the different in temperature. The corrosion product that formed on the specimen’s surfaces was also thoroughly characterized. SEM, FTIR, and XRD were used to observe the corrosion product. Additionally, using open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the specimen’s corrosion resistance was investigated using an electrochemical method in solutions of NaCl, Na2SO4, and NaCl + Na2SO4 to simulate atmospheric corrosion environment.
