Abstract

This chapter delves into the simulation-based analysis of autonomous cooperative driving services, focusing on the Market Penetration Rate (MPR) of autonomous vehicles and their impact on traffic dynamics and safety. The study constructs a detailed simulation network of Daejeon, South Korea, incorporating various road types and traffic conditions. It evaluates the effects of autonomous vehicles' strategic actions, such as route and lane changes, on overall traffic flow and individual vehicle trajectories. The research finds that the introduction of autonomous vehicles initially negatively impacts the road network until the MPR reaches 30%, after which improvements in travel speed and time are observed. The study also highlights the significance of the MPR threshold at which network performance surpasses that of the existing traffic system. Additionally, the analysis of safety metrics, including Time-to-Collision (TTC), Modified Time-to-Collision (MTTC), and Deceleration Rate to Avoid Collision (DRAC), reveals significant improvements at an MPR of 60%. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for further research and the development of visualization tools to effectively manage and understand the impact of autonomous vehicles in urban traffic systems.
