Abstract

This chapter delves into the economic dynamics of agricultural households in India, focusing on income sources, expenditure patterns, and production assets. It highlights the significant income disparities among households, with larger landholdings generating substantially higher revenues. The analysis reveals that wages, crop production, and livestock farming are primary income sources, while non-farm businesses play a crucial role in bridging income gaps. The study also examines the impact of economic reforms and liberalization on income distribution, noting that the benefits have primarily accrued to the top 1% of the population. Additionally, it explores the challenges posed by population growth and climate variability on agricultural productivity and food security. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for inclusive development strategies to address income inequality and promote sustainable agricultural growth.
The chapters in this book are presented in the “International Conference on Legal and Economic Synergy for an Equitable Society, organised by the University Institute of Laws at Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana, India on February 1st, 2024”.
