Abstract

This chapter explores the impact of signalizing the intersection of Tibag-San Isidro Road and Romulo Highway in Tarlac City, Philippines, using a locally developed microsimulation software called LocalSim. The study focuses on optimizing traffic flow at this key intersection, which experiences high volumes of vehicles due to its proximity to popular locations. Data collection involved traffic counts at 15-minute intervals during peak hours, with various vehicle types considered. The study employed LocalSim to simulate both unsignalized and signalized scenarios, using Webster's equation to determine optimal cycle lengths and the One-step Bonferroni Method to calculate the minimum number of runs. Results showed that signalizing the intersection led to longer travel times and slower speeds but improved the level of service (LOS) and stabilized vehicular flow. The study concludes that signalizing the intersection generally resulted in better traffic management outcomes, despite the increased travel time and reduced speed.
