Abstract

This study delves into the effects of truck platooning on bridge substructures, focusing on the dynamic load allowance (DLA) and reliability of pile shafts. Through extensive numerical simulations and probabilistic modeling, the research reveals that truck platooning can significantly increase live load demands on bridges, particularly under poor road conditions. The study finds that certain truck velocities and inter-truck spacings can lead to resonance vibrations, posing safety risks to existing bridges. Additionally, the analysis shows that the reliability of pile shafts decreases with larger truck platooning sizes and shorter inter-truck spacings. The research concludes that regular inspection of road conditions and limitation of truck platooning sizes and spacings are crucial for ensuring bridge safety under dynamic impacts. This comprehensive study provides valuable insights for engineers and policymakers working on bridge design and maintenance in the context of emerging truck platooning technologies.
