Abstract

This study investigates the impact of truck platooning on pavement damage, focusing on fatigue cracking and rutting. The research compares 16 different platooning scenarios, varying the number of trucks and inter-vehicle spacing, to assess their effects on pavement performance. The study finds that truck platooning can increase pavement damage, particularly in scenarios with more trucks and minimal spacing. The research also highlights regional variations in damage levels, influenced by environmental and traffic conditions. The study concludes that while truck platooning offers significant benefits for freight transport, its potential impact on pavement longevity and maintenance must be carefully considered. The research provides valuable insights for transportation planners and pavement engineers looking to implement truck platooning while minimizing its potential drawbacks.
