Abstract

The chapter delves into the European Green Deal's objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, highlighting the significant role of the building sector in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. It introduces Energy Communities as an effective solution to mitigate energy poverty and drive the transition to renewable energy sources. The study focuses on Collective Self-Consumption Groups (CSGs) in Italy, proposing a methodology to obtain optimal sizing and financial feasibility for these groups. Using Python-based simulation tools, the authors evaluate different techno-economic scenarios, considering various plant sizes and energy price variations. The case study examines a CSG with 20 members, simulating different PV and BESS capacities and energy prices. The results provide valuable insights into the financial viability and benefits of CSGs, demonstrating the potential for significant cost savings and energy efficiency improvements. The research concludes by emphasizing the importance of democratizing local energy generation and consumption, offering stakeholders crucial information for decision-making in the transition to sustainable energy systems.
