Abstract

This study delves into the complex relationship between thermal comfort and occupant behavior in urban public parks, with a focus on Kanakakunnu Park. It explores how climatic parameters like air temperature, humidity, and wind speed, along with physical factors such as shading and street orientation, influence thermal comfort. The research also considers psychological parameters, including individual preferences and perceptions of comfort, which significantly impact behavior in outdoor environments. Through field surveys and microclimate measurements, the study identifies varying comfort levels across different zones within the park. Notably, Zone 3, despite higher temperatures, attracted more occupants than Zone 5(B), suggesting that factors beyond thermal comfort, such as the quality of the place, play a pivotal role in shaping human occupancy behavior. The findings underscore the importance of considering both environmental factors and psychological perceptions when designing outdoor spaces to enhance thermal comfort and improve the overall quality of life in urban areas. The study concludes that future research should explore adaptation and acclimatization processes among outdoor occupants and determine the most suitable thermal comfort index for specific environmental conditions.
