Abstract

The study focuses on the application of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models to simulate streamflow across the continental United States, utilizing the MOPEX dataset. The introduction of vegetation cover as a predictor significantly enhances the model's performance, particularly in regions with distinct climate and hydrologic regimes. The research highlights the temporal and spatial variability of model performance, showing that incorporating vegetation data can improve streamflow predictions, especially during periods of low vegetation activity. The findings provide valuable insights for integrating machine learning models into large-scale hydrologic systems, such as the NOAA National Water Model, and underscore the importance of long-term datasets in enhancing prediction accuracy.
