Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical assessment and monitoring of flood susceptibility zones using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) model and geospatial techniques, with a specific focus on the Lakhimpur block in Assam, India. The study underscores the devastating impacts of floods, driven by natural factors such as rainfall intensity and terrain capacity, as well as socio-economic development and climate change. The Brahmaputra River basin, known for its high surface flow and water levels, exemplifies the severe inundation and soil erosion challenges faced by the region. The research employs a multi-criteria decision analysis approach integrated with GIS to identify and map flood-prone areas, utilizing eight key parameters including elevation, drainage density, and land use-land cover. The AHP model, renowned for its effectiveness in handling complex decisions, assigns relative weights to each parameter based on their influence on flood occurrence. The chapter meticulously details the data processing, pairwise comparison, and weighted overlay analysis, culminating in a flood susceptibility zonation map. This map, validated through historical flood data, serves as a vital tool for disaster-risk management, flood probability analysis, and mitigation strategies. The findings offer valuable insights for environmental planners, policymakers, and stakeholders, aiding in the development of effective flood management strategies and the creation of more resilient communities.
