Abstract

This chapter explores the critical issue of child pedestrian safety in school zones, focusing on the chaotic traffic conditions during peak times such as morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. Using UAV technology, the study captures detailed traffic data, revealing high-risk areas and patterns of conflict between pedestrians and vehicles. The analysis employs surrogate safety indicators like Time-to-Collision (TTC), Post Encroachment Time (PET), and Heavy Braking (HB) to identify severe conflicts and hazardous locations. The findings highlight significant differences in safety challenges between morning and afternoon periods, with targeted interventions suggested to improve safety. The study concludes that UAVs offer a novel and effective approach for comprehensive safety evaluations in school zones, providing valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and traffic management officials.
