Abstract

This study delves into the assessment of agricultural drought in the semi-arid and humid regions of South India, focusing on the Keecheri and Thamirabarani river basins. By employing remote sensing indices such as NDVI, NDWI, NDMI, and VCI, the research provides a detailed analysis of drought severity over a decade from 2014 to 2023. The methodology involves the use of satellite imagery from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2, collected from the USGS website, to calculate these indices. The study highlights the varying drought conditions across different years and regions, with NDVI indicating healthy vegetation in some areas and moderate drought in others. The results show that while most of the Keecheri river basin is under wet conditions, some agricultural lands experience water stress. In the Thamirabarani river basin, the western part exhibits extremely wet conditions, while the eastern part and coastal areas show dry to extremely dry conditions. The research concludes with a comprehensive understanding of drought impacts, emphasizing the importance of remote sensing in monitoring and mitigating agricultural drought.
