Assessment of Recently Developed Low-Force Extrusion Methods for Manufacturing Aluminium Vehicular Hydrogen Tank Liners

Abstract

The chapter explores the challenges and advancements in manufacturing aluminium hydrogen tank liners, essential for safe and efficient hydrogen storage in vehicles. It delves into the Paris Agreement's goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 and the promise of hydrogen as a clean energy source. The study focuses on the backward extrusion process, highlighting recent designs like Rotating Backward Extrusion (RBE), Hollow-Cylinder Backward Extrusion (HBE), and Small-Diameter Backward Extrusion (SBE) that aim to reduce extrusion force and improve tank integrity. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is employed to evaluate the efficiency of these methods, revealing significant force reductions and potential areas for improvement. The chapter concludes with insights into the effectiveness of these advanced designs and recommendations for future developments in the field.
