Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical assessment of shear strength parameters of marine dredge sand, specifically focusing on the Colombo Port City project. It begins by highlighting the significance of land reclamation in coastal areas and the geotechnical challenges associated with it. The study examines the compaction effort and shear behavior of dredged sand under different normal stresses, employing direct shear tests and various curve fitting methods. The results reveal the nonlinear variation of shear strength with increasing normal stress, which is crucial for designing foundations for structures built on reclaimed land. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for shear strength variation under different normal stress ranges, emphasizing the importance of considering nonlinear behavior for higher structural loads.
