Abstract

The chapter focuses on the assessment of embankment stability on soft ground, a critical issue in coastal regions and river valleys with thick layers of poor-quality soils. It introduces the Matsuo Chart, a construction control tool based on field measurements, and compares it with the SLOPE/W software, which employs limit equilibrium methods (LEM) and finite element analysis (FEA). The chapter presents five case studies from different regions, analyzing embankment stability using both Matsuo Chart and SLOPE/W. The results highlight the effectiveness of Matsuo Chart in providing construction control, with factors of safety that are comparable or slightly lower than those obtained from LEM. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the potential of advanced numerical techniques for further evaluating the reliability of construction control charts in slope stability analysis.
