Abstract

This study delves into the impact of climate change on thunderstorm winds in Canada, focusing on five key locations in southern Ontario: Toronto, Hamilton, Waterloo, London, and Windsor. Using advanced climate modeling, specifically the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, the research projects future trends in thunderstorm events and design-level wind speeds. The analysis reveals an increasing trend in annual thunderstorm events, with Toronto and Windsor experiencing the most significant rise. The study also highlights the importance of considering storm separations in climate change assessments, as the influence of thunderstorm winds on design-level wind speeds varies by location. The results show that climate change can considerably contribute to the final design level of wind speeds, particularly in areas close to lakes. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights for professionals involved in structural design and climate adaptation planning.
