Abstract

The chapter 'Assignment of a Vibration to a Graphical Object Induced by Resonant Frequency' delves into the innovative use of resonant frequency to generate haptic feedback for graphical objects on everyday surfaces. By leveraging the physical phenomenon of resonance, the authors propose a method that uses sound to induce vibrations in objects, creating a tangible feedback experience without the need for embedded motors or actuators. The research explores the potential of this approach for interactive design, highlighting its advantages in terms of scalability and minimal hardware requirements. The authors conduct a user study to evaluate the effectiveness of this method, revealing that haptic feedback can be accurately assigned to graphical objects when the duration of the feedback matches the touch duration and additional auditory feedback is provided. The study also identifies key factors that influence the perception of haptic feedback, such as the realism of the graphical representation and the duration of the feedback. The findings suggest that this approach could be particularly useful in ubiquitous computing, where the integration of haptic feedback into everyday objects is desirable. The chapter concludes by discussing the limitations of the current setup and proposing future research directions to further advance this innovative method of haptic feedback creation.
