Abstract

The present study explores the role of psychological factors, particularly personality traits, in shaping attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence (AI). The rapid integration of AI into daily life through applications in healthcare, entertainment, and education prompts the need to understand public perception, especially among youth who are primary consumers of technological advancements. This study examines the influence of openness to experience, extraversion, and preference for science fiction media on attitudes toward AI. Additionally, the impact of demographic factors such as gender and academic year in college is assessed. A sample of 205 undergraduate students (78% female) was surveyed using the Attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence Scale (ATTARI-12) and the Novo Psych Five Factor Personality Scale (NFFPS-30). Results reveal a significant positive relationship between preference for science fiction and positive attitudes toward AI (r = 0.182, p < 0.01), as well as between extraversion and positive AI attitudes (r = 0.146, p < 0.05). No significant relationship was found between openness and attitudes toward AI. Gender analysis shows that females hold slightly less positive attitudes towards AI compared to males, though these differences were minimal. Academic year had no significant impact on AI attitudes. The findings highlight the influence of personality traits, particularly extraversion, and preference for science fiction media on positive perceptions of AI. These insights may benefit AI innovators and educational institutions seeking to implement AI-based technologies. Future research should explore cultural influences and extend the population beyond students to yield a broader understanding of AI perception.
