Abstract

The article 'Autochthony: Abandoning Social Mythologies of Rationality' delves into the idea that people's social interactions are often not guided by deliberate plans but rather by spontaneous, serendipitous processes. It argues that the notion of rational choice theory, which assumes individuals plan and act deliberately, is often a myth. Instead, social interactions are driven by immediate contingencies and the collective efforts of participants to make sense of situations as they unfold. The author draws on the works of Harold Garfinkel and other ethnomethodologists to illustrate how social order emerges spontaneously and is maintained through the collaborative efforts of participants. The article uses vivid examples, including a conversation between the author and his neighbors, to demonstrate how people navigate social interactions without always knowing what they are doing. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of recognizing the spontaneous and serendipitous nature of social interactions in understanding how society functions.
