Abstract

This chapter delves into the automated assessment of source-based writing in higher education using natural language processing (NLP) techniques. It discusses the importance of rubric-based writing assessment and the need for automated tools to assist instructors. The main focus is on PyrEval, a software tool that constructs a content model from reference summaries and outputs scores for the quality and coverage of students' content. PyrEval's modules, including a decomposition parser, a WTMF method, and a novel algorithm for allocating idea units, are detailed. The chapter presents experiments on different student writing samples, showing that PyrEval correlates well with human rubrics and can help instructors identify issues in student writing. Limitations and potential enhancements of PyrEval are also discussed, with a focus on improving the decomposition parser and semantic representation method to handle more complex sentences.
