Volvo integrates Google services into its Sensus infotainment system.

The Swedish car maker and Google announced last year that the Volvo Sensus infotainment system would be based on the Google Android platform in future. Volvo and Google are jointly developing apps and services for vehicles from the Swedish manufacturer. Volvo has now announced that it will be possible to install Google apps from the Play Store and software updates in real time in future. "Bringing Google services into Volvo cars will accelerate innovation in connectivity and boost our development in applications and connected services", said Henrik Green, Senior Vice President for Research and Development at Volvo.
Integrating Google Maps will give the driver access to map and traffic data in real time and provide information about the current traffic situation. Google Assistant will allow vehicle functions such as the air conditioning to be operated or apps to be controlled via the central voice control system, for example. According to Volvo, the new infotainment system "will be introduced in a few years". The partnership between Volvo and Google reflects the convergence between automotive and technology companies as cars become increasingly connected. Using Android as the underlying operating system should increase speed and flexibility in the development and offer customers the ability to personalise their in-car experience.
