BMW presents the second generation of the 2 Series Active Tourer. The five-seater compact van gets a modern crossover design on the outside and the latest version of the iDrive operating system in the interior.

The new BMW Active Tourer is 4386 mm long, 1824 mm wide as well as 1576 mm high. The kidney radiator grille between the standard LED headlights has grown significantly compared to its predecessor. The A-pillars now stand flatter, the side window graphics are more elongated, and the door handles are also flush integrated. Towards the rear, narrower C-pillars are noticeable, while the LED taillights emphasize the width. The wheelbase of 2670 mm is said to offer more space for up to five people. Newly developed seats and improved insulation are said to enhance comfort. The rear seat backrests can be folded in a 40 : 20 : 40 ratio. Trunk capacity is 470 to 1,455 l, and 415 to 1,405 l for the mild hybrid versions.

The entry-level model is the 100 kW (136 PS) BMW 218i Active Tourer. The 48-V MHEV BMW 223i Active Tourer offers a system output of 160 kW (218 PS), of which the combustion engine contributes up to 150 kW (204 PS) and the electric drive up to 14 kW (19 PS). In the BMW 220i Active Tourer, output is 125 kW (170 PS), with the combustion engine producing 115 kW (156 PS). Power is transmitted via the 7-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission.

PHEV models to follow

The only diesel model available is the BMW 218d Active Tourer with 110 kW (150 PS). The range will be supplemented by two plug-in hybrid models from summer 2022. The chassis consists of a single-link spring strut axle at the front and a three-link rear axle at the rear. An "Adaptive M Chassis" is also available as an option, with frequency-selective damping, sports steering and lowering by 15 mm.

For the first time, the compact van features the iDrive operating system based on BMW Operating System 8. The "BMW Curved Display" comprises the 10.25" "Information Display" and the "Control Display" with a diagonal of 10.7". It is operated via touchscreen and voice control, and the "BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant" is also available. Android Auto and Apple Carplay are also available, as is an interior camera that takes snapshots of the occupants and sends them to the customer’s smartphone.
