The eighth generation of the VW Passat is being redesigned and can be driven semi-automatically up to a speed of 210 km/h. The premiere will take place at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show.

The revised version of the VW Passat will be brought to market as a saloon and as a station wagen Variant. The facelift can be seen, for example, in the modified front and rear bumpers or in the LED headlights, which are optionally equipped with the interactive "IQ.Light" LED matrix system. New paint colours and light alloy wheels are also available.

Volkswagen describes the facelift of the Passat as a "technical update". With its "Travel Assist" function, for example, the Passat is Volkswagen's first model to master semi-automated driving at speeds of up to 210 km/h. Among other things, the system works with a steering wheel with capacitive sensing. The "Emergency Steering Assist" system is designed to increase safety during evasive manoeuvres with braking intervention.

The lifted VW Passat also offers the option of a permanent internet connection via the "Modular Infotainment Construction Kit" (MIB3) and allows the integration of smartphone apps into the system via "App Connect". The "Volkswagen We" digital platform will enable vehicle settings to be stored on a cloud. Certain Samsung smartphones should be able to open and start the Passat as mobile keys. The "Digital Cockpit" digital instrument cluster is a further development of the digital instrumentation available.

The powertrain features the 2.0 TDI Evo diesel engine with 110 kilowatts (150 hp) output, reducing CO2 emissions even further, compared to its predecessor. The other TDI engines deliver 88 kilowatts (120 hp), 140 kilowatts (190 hp) and 176 kilowatts (240 hp). The TSI petrol engines are 110 kilowatts (150 hp), 140 kilowatts (190 hp) and 200 kilowatts (272 hp) strong and equipped with a petrol particulate filter. All engines achieve the limits set out in the Euro 6d-TEMP emission standard. The Passat GTE hybrid model with 160 kilowatts (218 hp) system output is now to offer a purely electric range of up to 55 kilometres according to WLTP and already meets the Euro 6d emission standard.
