The Mercedes-AMG A 45 4matic+ and its New 4-Cylinder Turbo Engine
Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its latest A 45 4matic+ and CLA 45 4matic+ models. The S-variant has an even more powerful configuration in the newly developed turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.
Mercedes-AMG's flagship compact models, the A 45 4matic+ and CLA 45 4matic+, now feature the wide radiator grille with 12 vertical louvres. Both models have powerdomes on the bonnet, new side skirts, two round twin fins on the diffuser, and front and rear spoilers. Options include an AMG aerodynamics pack.
The newly developed 2.0-litre petrol engine is rotated around its vertical axis by 180 degrees for improved airflow. The cooling system is designed so that the cylinder head and crankcase can be cooled to different temperature levels. In addition, a two-stage indirect intercooler is integrated in the low-temperature circuit.
Two engine classes
The high-performance 4-cylinder engine with two-stage fuel injection comes in two performance categories. The basic model has an output of 285 kW (387 HP) and a peak torque of 480 Nm, while the S-variant packs 310 kW (421 HP) and 500 Nm, ranking it as the most powerful four-cylinder in production. The A 45 4matic+ does 0–100 km/h in 4.0 seconds (4.1 for the CLA 45 4matic+) and the S-Version in 3.9 (4.0 for the CLA 45 S 4matic+), with top speeds of 250 and 270 km/h respectively.
The cars are fitted with an 8-speed AMG Speedshift DCT-8G dual-clutch transmission. The AMG production models feature all-wheel drive with AMG Torque Control, with two electronically controlled multidisc clutches connected to the rear axle drive shaft to distribute the drive power selectively between the left and right rear wheel. The bodyshell has been strengthened with a strut brace in the engine compartment, reinforcing plates between the side members and A-pillars and a shearing plate underneath the engine.
AMG chassis and Race mode
The AMG chassis, with McPherson strut design on the front axle and 4-link rear suspension, can be optimised with the optional AMG Ride Control adaptive damping system. The high-performance braking system in the basic model features 4-piston monobloc fixed front callipers, while the S-variant has 6-piston callipers and larger brake discs.
Interior features include sporty seats and steering wheel, with speed-sensitive, electro-mechanical parameter steering as standard. Details on the S-model are slightly different, including yellow highlights and AMG steering wheel controls. Drivers can choose from three AMG different display styles for the digital instrument cluster. There are six driving modes, with Race mode as standard on the S-model and optional on the basic version. The AMG Dynamics vehicle dynamics control is designed for agility, with brief braking intervention at the inner rear wheel for spontaneous, responsive handling.
