BMW has unveiled the second generation of the X4 with a partially revamped design and engines as powerful as ever. The new “Sports Activity Coupé” will be unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2018.

Compared to its predecessor launched in 2014, the X4, codenamed G02, has grown by 81 millimetres to 4,752 millimetres in length. The wheelbase was stretched 54 mm to 2,864 millimetres, while the weight was trimmed by 50 kilograms. The design of the sporty SUV has changed little. The new model’s most conspicuous features are the protruding rear LED lights, which will probably also be introduced in other BMW models in the future.

The sporty derivative of the BMW X3 comes in a range with three petrol and four diesel engines that underscore the dynamic character of the X4. The least powerful BMW X4 xDrive 20i delivers 135 kW (184 hp), while the xDrive 30i produces 185 kW (252 hp). The X4 M40i with a six-cylinder inline engine delivers 265 kW (360 hp) as before. The diesel engines start with the 140 kW (190 hp) BMW X4 xDrive20d, while the xDrive25d achieves 170 kW (231 hp). The inline six-cylinder premium models deliver 195 kW (265 hp) in the guise of the xDrive30d and 240 kW (326 hp) in the M40d.

The BMW X4 with a sporty edge

An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive come as standard on all X4 models, as does M Performance Sport Chassis, Performance Control and variable sport steering. An optional sports brake system and adaptive suspension with electronic damper control are also available.

The X4’s interior features a modernised cockpit with Black Panel technology in the instrument cluster. The “Control Display” on the centre console has an optional 10.25 inch-sized screen that can be operated by touch control or the I-Drive button; voice and gesture control are also possible.

The optional driver assistance systems range from Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection, though to the Cross Traffic Assistant and Intersection Assistant. When it comes to networking, the X4 offers services such as Real Time Traffic Information, On-Street Parking Information and Concierge Service.
