Ferrari is unveiling the open-top version of its Berlinetta sports car with plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Ferrari 296 GTS is equipped with a retractable hardtop soft top.
Dimensions and basic design of the Ferrari 296 GTS are the same as the closed 296 GTB version. However, the GTS features a lightweight hardtop that can be electrically retracted and extended in 14 s at speeds of up to 45 km/h. The dividing line between the body and the hard top runs above the B-pillar. This divides the folding roof into two parts that fold flush over the front of the engine. With the soft top retracted, the cabin and rear are separated by a height-adjustable glass rear window. To increase torsional and flexural rigidity, the chassis has been optimized. In addition, the Spider version features an active rear spoiler.
Like the 296 GTB, the 296 GTS is powered by a new 120° V6 gasoline engine in conjunction with an electric motor. Ferrari puts total output at 610 kW (830 PS), of which the combustion engine with IHI turbocharger accounts for 488 kW (663 PS); the electric motor sits between the engine and transmission and delivers 122 kW (167 PS). The 1540 kg sports car weighs around 70 kg more than the closed version and yet sprints to 100 km/h in 2.9 s and is around 330 km/h fast.
Assetto Fiorano package also available for the Ferrari 296 GTS
Power is also transmitted to the rear wheels in the GTS via an eight-speed Dual-clutch Transmission (DCT) and an E-Differential. The TMA (Transition Manager Actuator) ensures quick changes between electric and hybrid modes. The eDrive, hybrid, performance and qualify driving modes are monitored by the 6-way chassis dynamics sensor (6w-CDS). The battery is 7.45 kWh, and the all-electric range is said to be 25 km. The electric top speed is 135 km/h. For more driving dynamics, customers of the 296 GTS can also choose the Assetto Fiorano package.
