About this book

This book presents an interdisciplinary approach to autonomous driving technology design and development. It discusses a methodology of simulation that allows specialists to evaluate autonomous vehicle sensors functionality and integration, energy flow, efficiency, range, and service under public transport.

The design, calibration, and physical model behind each autonomous vehicle sensor and component is explained. For each specific vehicle, the powertrain is analyzed, and output results are presented through the use of specific automotive industrial software (IPG CarMaker).

The book gives the reader a clear perspective of the key factors influencing the global functionality of autonomous shuttle buses with respect to both their inner components the variable exterior factors and an exhaustive legal perspective in relation of their presence on public roads.

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Autonomous Driving Basics
Abstract
History has shown that long before the beginnings of autonomous vehicle development, the aeronautical, naval and railway industries successfully (partially or completely) replaced human intervention in the control of airplanes, submarines, trains, and subways. The beginning of self-driving was a complicated process, it was a technology that developed in the background, without concrete applications for the transport economy or for the industry in general.
Călin Iclodean, Bogdan Ovidiu Varga, Nicolae Cordoș
Chapter 2. Autonomous Driving Technical Characteristics
Abstract
In recent years, autonomous driving has become not only a hypothetical driving solution, but a reality. The vehicle models used in the implementation of this concept are similar to the pre-existing, classic solutions, but in addition to the current systems they also include a complex network of sensors.
Călin Iclodean, Bogdan Ovidiu Varga, Nicolae Cordoș
Chapter 3. Autonomous Driving Systems
Abstract
The autonomous driving ability is provided by the autonomous driving system based on blocks consisting of combinations of functions and properties that define the characteristics of the environment and the objects found in this environment.
Călin Iclodean, Bogdan Ovidiu Varga, Nicolae Cordoș
Chapter 4. Safety and Cybersecurity
Abstract
Functional safety is an essential component of a vehicle's hardware and software development cycle, which is designed to identify system-wide malfunctions and to specify actions, techniques, and methods to reduce potential risks and damages caused by errors.
Călin Iclodean, Bogdan Ovidiu Varga, Nicolae Cordoș
Chapter 5. Route Specification
Abstract
Autonomous vehicles (especially autonomous shuttle buses) operate like a vehicle on rails that travels on a well-established route and stops at stations on the route. The main difference is the road, which in the case of autonomous vehicles is a virtual route, a line defined by geographical coordinates (latitude, longitude, altitude).
Călin Iclodean, Bogdan Ovidiu Varga, Nicolae Cordoș
Chapter 6. Virtual Model
Abstract
Before reaching the asphalt, an autonomous vehicle must struggle to validate its drivability and decision-making strategy in a closed loop simulation environment, millions of kilometers of digitalized road populated with real life scenarios are the environment where the control algorithms are evaluated, maneuvers are performed, and safety scenarios are implemented.
Călin Iclodean, Bogdan Ovidiu Varga, Nicolae Cordoș
Chapter 7. Legal Framework
Abstract
Since there are means of transport using external energy sources, relevant rules and regulations have been established, but some of them have sometimes been inadequate and disproportionate to the harmful potential of these means of transport.
Călin Iclodean, Bogdan Ovidiu Varga, Nicolae Cordoș
Chapter 8. Social Implication
Abstract
The social impact of any new technology must be assessed in terms of the efficiency and benefits it brings to society, as well as the direct impact on the environment in which it evolves. Society needs to prepare for these new technologies, first to accept them and then to become familiar with them. There are people who will be directly affected by these new technologies and for whom society needs to prepare retraining or alternative plans for their current jobs or profession.
