Abstract

The chapter 'Axiomatic Thinking—Applied to Religion' investigates the application of axiomatic thinking to religious beliefs and practices. It begins by discussing the general problems of applying logic to religion, as previously explored by Bochenski. The focus is on the specific language used in religious discourse, particularly in Christianity, which includes the Creed and Commands. The text argues that these elements are essential for defining a believer and can be analyzed using axiomatic systems. It delves into the application of axiomatic thinking to divine attributes like omniscience and omnipotence, using logical operators and modalities to explore God's knowledge and will. The chapter also discusses the different types of belief, including knowledge-inclusive and knowledge-exclusive beliefs, and how they apply to religious contexts. Throughout, the text provides a comprehensive and rigorous analysis, making it a valuable resource for scholars in theology, philosophy, and logic.
This paper has been given in Lisbon in 2017; meanwhile the author has written an extensive study (going beyond the third part of this essay). It is published by De Gruyter with the title “An axiomatic study of God. A defence of the rationality of religion” (2021). The author is indebted to the members of the 2018 Bergseminar for valuable suggestions.
