Abstract

This chapter delves into the use of game theoretic analysis to understand International Environmental Agreements, particularly focusing on climate change negotiations. It begins by tracing the history of climate change negotiations, from the UNFCCC to the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. The author discusses the shift from burden-sharing agreements to the pledge and review process, highlighting the relevance of bargaining theory in this context. The chapter explores various bargaining models, including the Nash Bargaining Solution and the Rubinstein Bargaining Solution, and their applications to climate negotiations. It also examines the role of unilateral actions, leadership, and asymmetric information in these negotiations. The chapter concludes by discussing the need for modified bargaining models to analyze the Paris Agreement effectively and suggests avenues for future research.
