Visual informatics, as a subject concept proposed in the early 90s, is a new interdisciplinary area to study theories, techniques and applications of imaging science systematically. Its research method correlates with mathematics, physics, physiology, psychology, information science, electronics and computer science. Its research scope overlaps with pattern recognition, computer vision, real-time image processing, computer graphics and virtual reality. Its research progress synchronizes with artificial intelligence, neural networks, genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic. Its development and application tie with bio-medicine, remote sensing, communication and document processing closely. This paper proposes some definite explanation and concept to revise the problem without unified definition of some terminologies. Then it introduces the concept and applications of a new technology in visual information—spectral imaging comprehensively. Finally, it put forward the key issues existing in the agricultural application.
