Porsche Unveils the Taycan Electric Sports Sedan
In 2015, Porsche showcased its Mission E concept car at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. Now, Porsche has unveiled its serial models: The first two models of the four-door electric sports car will be the Taycan Turbo and the Taycan Turbo S.
The design of the 4,963 mm long, 1,966 mm wide and 1,378 mm high Porsche Taycan is based on the Mission E concept car and existing models such as the four-door Panamera. "The Taycan links our heritage to the future," says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, at the world premiere.
The Porsche Taycan weighs approx. 2.3 t and has a system voltage of 800 V and permanently excited synchronous machines on the front axle and the rear axle, making it all-wheel drive. The electric machine, transmission and pulse-controlled inverter are each combined into a compact drive module.
The Porsche Taycan will be released in Turbo and Turbo S variants
The Taycan Turbo offers 500 kW/680 HP, while the Taycan Turbo S can reach 560 kW/761 HP with its Overboost function. The vehicle's maximum torque is 850 Nm for the Turbo and 1,050 Nm for the Turbo S. A two-speed transmission is installed at the rear axle. The Taycan Turbo accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, while the Taycan Turbo S completes this sprint in 2.8 seconds. The top speed of both models is 260 km/h.
The integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control analyses and synchronises all chassis systems in real time, providing the cars' driving dynamics. The systems include adaptive air suspension with three-chamber technology, including PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) electronic damper control, as well as the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport (PDCC Sport) electromechanical roll stabilisation system, including Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus). Four driving modes are available: "Range", "Normal", "Sport" and "Sport Plus".
Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo to be released in 2020
The Turbo has a range of 388 to 412 km, and the Turbo S a range of 381 to 450 km (according to WLTP). The overall capacity of the Performance Battery Plus is 93.4 kWh, and the recuperation power of both electric motors is 265 kW. The 800 V system offers a DC charging time of 22.5 minutes for an 80 percent SoC (state of charge).
Porsche had previously already showcased the Taycan's interior with its freestanding, curved instrument cluster. The number of classic hardware controls such as switches and buttons has been greatly reduced. Instead, control is intelligent and intuitive – using touch operation or the voice control function. Further, less powerful Taycan models are due for release. The Taycan Cross Turismo crossover model will be released at the end of 2020.
