Abstract

This study investigates the behavior of diesel fuel hydrocarbons in soils of the Far North following a significant spill near Norilsk. The research focuses on the transformation and migration of hydrocarbons in sandy and alluvial-gley soils, as well as the impact of these processes on the environment. Key findings include the penetration of diesel fuel components into sandy soils near the accident site, with concentrations decreasing by half at a depth of 30 cm. The study also notes changes in hydrocarbon composition across the soil profile, with an increase in high-molecular-weight normal and isoprenoid alkanes, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and a decrease in low-molecular-weight compounds. In floodplain sod-alluvial-gley soils of the Ambarnaya River, a significant decrease in the concentration of diesel fuel hydrocarbons was recorded compared to soils near the depressurized reservoir. The composition of contaminants underwent significant changes due to phase transitions during transport in the water flow, with the absence of low-molecular members of all homologous series. One year after the accident, analysis of the floodplain soils showed persistent signs of diesel fuel contamination, with complex processes of contaminant redistribution along the soil profile due to seasonal hydrodynamics. The study provides valuable insights into the environmental consequences of diesel spills in Arctic regions, highlighting the need for effective cleanup and restoration strategies in these fragile ecosystems.
