Abstract

This study delves into the critical issue of climate change impacts on onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTSs) near the Great Lakes, focusing on coastal flooding and shoreline erosion. Through field investigations at Ipperwash Beach on Lake Huron, the study reveals significant shoreline recession and its effects on nutrient loading to the Great Lakes. The research also employs a regional-scale geospatial model to assess the vulnerability of OWTSs in the Ontario Lake Erie Basin to coastal flooding and erosion. Key findings include the identification of areas with high erosion rates and the projection of increased OWTS vulnerability under future climate scenarios. The study concludes with recommendations for proactive measures to mitigate these risks, emphasizing the need for enhanced monitoring, nature-based erosion control, and improved system design. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights for policymakers and communities to address the challenges posed by climate change to wastewater infrastructure.
