Abstract

This chapter explores the evolution of geotechnical investigation practices, emphasizing the integration of advanced in-situ tests like the electric cone penetration test with porewater pressure measurement (CPTu). Through a detailed case study of an industrial facility with large grain silos, the text illustrates how CPTu enhances the reliability of geotechnical parameters and justifies higher safe net bearing pressures. The investigation included boreholes, trial pits, and CPTu tests, revealing substantial cost savings by eliminating the need for ground improvement. The chapter delves into the site stratigraphy, SPT values, and CPT plots, correlating them with geotechnical parameters such as undrained shear strength, angle of internal friction, and bulk density. It also compares conventional borehole data with CPTu data, demonstrating significant increases in modulus of elasticity and net allowable bearing pressure. The foundation analysis for various footing sizes and a 32-meter diameter raft foundation shows that CPTu can justify higher bearing pressures, leading to substantial cost savings and time efficiency. The conclusion underscores the benefits of incorporating advanced testing methods like CPTu in geotechnical investigations, highlighting the potential for significant cost savings and improved foundation design reliability.
