Abstract

The article investigates the impact of dispositional optimism and pessimism on future well-being in adults, moving beyond the traditional unitary construct approach. It introduces the tripartite model of meaning in life, which includes comprehension, purpose, and mattering, and examines how these facets contribute to well-being. The study employs a prospective design to assess the predictive power of these variables on subsequent life satisfaction, positive affect, and subjective happiness. The findings suggest that both optimism and pessimism play significant roles, with specific facets of meaning in life adding unique predictive value. This research highlights the importance of considering multiple dimensions of meaning in life to fully understand and predict adult well-being.
