Abstract

The chapter delves into the historical and contemporary silencing of African knowledge systems due to colonialism and coloniality, highlighting the long-lasting effects of colonialism on African education and knowledge production. It critiques the reactive stance of African scholars and universities, which have largely adopted western models of knowledge. The chapter advocates for a shift from reaction to proactive engagement with Indigenous knowledge systems, emphasizing the need for epistemic freedom and cognitive justice. It suggests that African universities should embrace AIKS to create a more inclusive and representative knowledge production system. The chapter concludes by highlighting the importance of recentering Africa in global knowledge production through the embrace of Indigenous knowledge systems.
