Abstract

This chapter covers big data, which refers to the large volume of structured and unstructured data with the potential to be mined for information. The manufacturing industry has joined the big data bandwagon as well because data has long been the lifeblood of manufacturing. Big data analytics can provide the manufacturing industry the need to succeed in an increasingly complex environment. This chapter provides an introduction to the use of big data in manufacturing. It begins by giving an overview on the characteristics of big data. It covers big data analytics. It describes the role of big data in manufacturing. It presents some applications of big data in manufacturing. It highlights the benefits and challenges of big data in manufacturing. It presents global adoption of big data in manufacturing.
