Abstract

This article delves into the intricate world of bilingual language control, examining the dual mechanisms of reactive and proactive control. It discusses common experimental paradigms such as the cued language switching paradigm, alternating switching paradigm, voluntary switching paradigm, and n-2 switching paradigm, each with its unique scope of application. The article also explores theoretical frameworks like the inhibitory control model, non-specific language selection hypothesis, language-specific selection hypothesis, dual mechanisms framework, and adaptive control hypothesis, providing a comprehensive understanding of the underlying cognitive processes. A significant focus is on the relationship between bilingual language control and domain-general cognitive control, highlighting how these mechanisms interact and the factors influencing their relationship. The article concludes by proposing a bilingual control framework for future research, emphasizing the need for more ecologically valid settings, sensitive measures, and a comprehensive understanding of bilingual experiences. This review offers valuable insights into the dynamic and multidimensional nature of bilingual language control, making it a must-read for professionals in the field.
