Abstract

The chapter 'Bilingualism in the Labour Market' examines the economic implications of bilingualism in the UK, using data from the Understanding Society survey. It finds that bilingual women earn less than their monolingual counterparts, while men show no significant difference. The negative effect for women is more pronounced in areas with fewer English speakers and is driven by speakers of South Asian or less common languages. The study highlights the importance of controlling for family background and unobservable characteristics in understanding these effects. It also discusses the potential mechanisms behind the observed differences, including skill enhancement, labour market demand, and discrimination.
