Abstract

The chapter 'BIM-to-FEM: Development of a Software Tool to Increase the Operational Efficiency of Dam Construction Projects' explores the critical role of Geotechnical Finite-Element-Analyses (FEA) in the planning of infrastructure projects like dams. It introduces a powerful software tool that automates the transfer of information from ProVI to Plaxis 2D and back, using Python programming. The tool generates a 3D point cloud for volume analysis of settlements, optimizing geotechnical measures during the planning phase. This innovative approach addresses key challenges in data integration, such as inconsistent information types and data formats, and enhances the reliability of settlement predictions. The chapter also discusses the integration of ground water data and construction schedules, highlighting the importance of these factors in accurate FEA. The new tool offers a modular structure with robust error handling and a user-friendly graphical user interface, making it a valuable asset for professionals seeking to improve the efficiency and accuracy of dam construction projects.
