Abstract

Bio-flocculants, derived from microorganisms, plants, and animals, offer a sustainable alternative to chemical flocculants in wastewater treatment. This chapter explores the advantages of bio-flocculants, including their biodegradability and lower toxicity, and their applications in removing suspended solids, heavy metals, and organic matter from wastewater. Machine learning plays a crucial role in optimizing bio-flocculant performance by predicting optimal dosages, clustering wastewater samples, and dynamically adjusting treatment strategies. The text delves into various machine learning approaches, such as supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning, and neural networks, highlighting their potential to enhance wastewater treatment efficiency. Additionally, it discusses the challenges and opportunities in bio-flocculant research, including data availability, model interpretability, and computational complexity. The chapter concludes with future directions for integrating machine learning with bio-flocculant technology to improve wastewater treatment processes.
