Abstract

The article delves into the extraction of bioactive compounds from Agave angustifolia Haw. leaf waste, a byproduct of the bacanora industry. It highlights the importance of revaluing this underutilized resource, which constitutes a significant portion of the plant's weight and is often discarded. The study evaluates different extraction methods, including aqueous and ethanol-based processes, to optimize yield and identify the most effective technique. The physicochemical characterization of the extracts reveals a high carbohydrate content and significant mineral composition, with potassium and calcium being the predominant minerals. The extracts demonstrate notable antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, attributed to the presence of phenolic compounds and saponins. The optimized extract shows potential for various applications, including food preservation, medical treatments, and the development of packaging materials. The research underscores the feasibility of using Agave angustifolia Haw. leaf waste as a sustainable source of bioactive compounds, contributing to environmental, economic, and social benefits.
