Excerpt

The study focuses on the application and emissions behavior of biodiesel fuels on a four-stroke auxiliary engine during a commercial voyage. Three fuel qualities—marine gas oil, heavy fuel oil, and B100 (fatty acid methyl ester)—were evaluated for their efficiency and emissions impact. The experimental setup included advanced emissions and in-cylinder pressure measurements. Results indicate that B100 offers a viable alternative for engine operation, with slight reductions in brake thermal efficiency and increased brake specific fuel consumption. Notably, B100 meets IMO Tier II nitric oxide emission limits and significantly reduces particulate emissions, highlighting its potential for environmental and health protection.
