Abstract

This chapter delves into the biomethane potential of organic waste from vegetable greenhouses in the Leamington–Kingsville area of Ontario. The study focuses on the anaerobic digestion of waste from pepper, tomato, and cucumber farms, including their respective leaves and end-of-crop cycle waste. Key findings reveal that tomato waste shows the highest methane yield, followed by pepper and cucumber waste, while leaf wastes consistently produce lower yields. The study also explores the kinetic modeling of methane production, highlighting the importance of the lag phase and effective digestion time. The results demonstrate that greenhouse waste is a viable option for renewable energy production, with significant potential for improving waste management practices and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The chapter concludes by suggesting further investigation into co-digestion to enhance the efficiency of biomethane production.
