Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of biotechnological strategies in conserving and improving rare and endangered plant species. It highlights the importance of quick micropropagation methods and the use of in vitro techniques for the recovery and restoration of threatened flora. The text explores the role of molecular marker technology, including biochemical markers like isozymes, phytochemical markers, and DNA-based markers such as RAPD, SSR, and ISSR, in assessing genetic diversity. It also discusses various biotechnological strategies like micropropagation, protoplast culture, somatic embryogenesis, organogenesis, micrografting, and cryopreservation. Additionally, the chapter covers genetic manipulation techniques such as Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation and RNAi technology for improving yield and quality traits.
