Abstract

This chapter explores the application of YOLOv8, a deep learning model, for accurate bird species recognition, which is vital for ecological monitoring and biodiversity conservation. It discusses the limitations of traditional methods, such as field observation and manual classification, which are time-consuming and error-prone. The chapter also highlights the challenges faced by previous deep learning approaches in low-light conditions, cluttered environments, and with small bird species. It emphasizes the importance of automated bird species recognition in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). The chapter concludes by discussing the potential of YOLOv8 to overcome these challenges and provide a more efficient and scalable solution for bird species recognition, aiding in habitat conservation and preservation.
